Scrub the inside of the hurricane lamp to ensure that it is as clean as possible. Do not insert the candle until you have cleaned and dried the lamp. A solution of soapy water and towel dry should be sufficient. Place the lamp and candle in a safe place. The ideal place should be well ventilated and protected from drafts or vents, other strong drafts. Strong irregular air flow can alter the candle flame and soot deposited over the lamp. Light the candle carefully. Use a long match or a long nose kitchen lighter to reach the lamp and candle light. Once you have turned, slowly remove the match or lighter, being careful not to burn the edges of the hurricane lamp.
